'The Georgia Mistress'
The Rebuild Story of a 1988 Peterbilt 379

The Before "As Was" Shot

Glenn & Tracy

I had been searching for an older Peterbilt to convert into a show and shine truck to cruise around in and pull our fifth wheel RV. After searching for the last few years I found a truck in Atlanta, GA on Ebay. A 1988 379 Peterbilt single axle, Cummins 400, 9 speed with 3.70 rear end. The truck already was already had the back end boxed in and was set up for hauling gooseneck trailers, perfect. Unfortunately, the current owner had painted the truck primer black, including painting the grill, visor, chrome accents, marker lights, all but the bumper and stacks and steps. Not the nicest looking truck but lots of potential. After flying down to Atlanta at the end of November, Tracy and I checked the truck over at a friend’s shop. The truck needed some work but that was expected. We had to install steer tires as the others were weather cracked and I didn’t want to risk driving 1900 miles on them. We spent a day and a half in Atlanta then headed back to Saskatchewan (and -20 C). Four days later, with some site seeing along the way we arrived home with no incidents.
Once in our shop at home, over the next five months we stripped down the truck, cleaned all the primer paint off the grill, lights, etc. added rear lighting, did some minor bodywork, repainted the truck a metallic black, added more chrome, train horns, etc. During the process Tracy gave the truck the name, Georgia Mistress, as I was spending more time with the truck than her. We rolled the Mistress out the first weekend in May. Since then, we had the Mistress at a local show and Shine, where she attracted a lot of attention. Next comes the road trips with the fifth wheel trailer, starting with one at the end of June.
